Don't bother. You know the story. A deeply in love couple (you know this from their long lingering looks) deals with the aftermath of an accident in which the wife loses her memory and remembers nothing of her husband and her life for the last five years. Enter an ex boyfriend and a cliche family from the burbs whose agenda for their daughter was different than her dreams. Will her husband win her back? Does she love him? Does she not? You got it.... She does.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Mixed Feelings

This movie is slow to start and the sophistacated message - what we discover in our searching, while not what we thought we would find, can be redemptive all the same - is definitely an adult concept. There isn't much of a plot. A young boy with Aspergers Syndrome searches to find the lock that fits a mysterious key that he found in his father's closet after his father died in 9/11. The movie picks up considerably with the entrance of a mute neighbor who joins Oskar in his search. Sandra Bullock as the grieving widow and surprisingly aware mother is terrific, as is Oskar. While there are moments of delight and humor, the pain of each character is unrelenting until the very end when we get a sense of closure, purpose and redemption. I liked this movie but it is not for everyone.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A feel good movie

The theater was packed with a multi-racial audience of young families and people whose parents would have served in WWII. There were spontaneous cheers during the movie and at the end there was heartfelt applause. The true story is a great one. It tells how the all black flying squadron, marginalized and kept away from action because of explicit and overt racism, demanded the right to equal treatment in the military. Their excellence, professionalism, patriotism and skill could not be denied or ignored. Through sheer determination, they earned respect and a place on the front lines where they were allowed to fight for their country (which BTW still had segregated lunchrooms and bathrooms at home) and to die. The movie itself is a little thin on plot and I never did get a handle on Cuba Goodings character but the flying sequences are grand and the overall effect is worthwhile and uplifting.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Do NOT bother

This has got to be one of the worst movies...ever. There is absolutely no redemption, no hope, no joy anywhere in it. Charlize Theron gives a completely credible portrayal of a narcissistic, self absorbed, unhappy alcoholic brat who was sefish and obnoxious in high school and, has not changed as a young adult...except that now she feels lonely. (What a surprise). She has no insight, doesn't get any insight, and the movie ends with her going back to her miserable life with apparently no capacity to alter its trajectory. She is thoroughly unlikeable from beginning to end. Do not bother with this movie. I just told you all there is to kow.

Oh Dear Oh Dear Oh Dear

What happened to Gary Marshall??!! Pretty Woman it isn't. Nothing hangs together in this movie. While the cast is fabulous-- their stories are totally improbable and completely unbelievable. Worse yet, not one of the would be couples has a shred of sex appeal or any chemistry to speak of. There are a couple of sweet moments and the sentiment, while hackneyed, is still a nice one. My husband and I didn't get up and leave but we did have a couple of "oh give me a break" and " are you kidding me?!?" moments.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Don't have to know baseball to like this movie

Brad Pitt is terrific as Billie Beane and his nerdy, economic major, Yale grad sidekick (Jonah Hill) makes the movie with his dead-pan, innocent sincerity and his sometimes confused reactions to Beane. What little dialogue there is moves the story forward. It is clever, witty, and funny. The movie, however, is too long. The facts around the Boston Red Sox offer to Beane are important but feel anti-climactic after a great build up around a 20 game winning streak. The song Beane's daughter sings during the movie credits at the end elicited spontaneous applause from the audience. It was a sweet (and funny) touch.. All in all an enjoyable evening.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a wonderful movie. I liked it better than the book which I read last summer. For sure they have abbreviated a couple of plot lines - the back story between Skeeter and her friends, and Skeeters relationship with her boyfriend but what they leave out is made up for in the nuanced context and stories of domestic racism in the 50s. The acting is superb and if you like Sissy Spacek you will love her here. Both my husband and I LOVED it.

Ponderous, Dark and Slow

Helen Miran was, as always, sensational. Her spot-on portrayal of a woman living a lie resonated with nuanced emotional truth. But after that, forget it. The other characters never quite get out of their own way and the plot line is tedious, slow and worse still, feels artificial and forced at times. I cannot recommend this movie to anyone but a fellow Miran fan

Save your money for the DVD

The cast is way better than the script which is riddled with potty humor and canned jokes. (You could write this screenplay yourself.) I didn't expect much because I had seen the trailers and so I wasn't too disappointed. Aniston and Sandler are charming and Nicole Kidman makes a surprise (to me) appearance in which she camps it up big time. This is a fun movie for a rainy afternoon at home when there isn't anything else to do. Save your money.

Really Good

I had resisted seeing this movie because I was afraid of the blood guts and gore factor. The idea of people's faces exploding in brilliant color and in gargantuan scale is not my thing. But there is zero gratuitous violence....just a really good story that has some psychological complexity and feels very true to Boston. I thought it was great.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
