To compare this movie to the original isn't really fair, but here goes. The Rooster Cogburn character in this version of True Grit is indeed a really gritty character. The previous incarnation was quintessential John Wayne with an eye patch. No offense to John Wayne fans, but now the story is actually not just another vehicle for Wayne, it's a fleshed-out tale of determination, vengeance and the adventures of a young girl in frontier territory.
Nailee Steinfeld steals the show with her amazing portrayal of Mattie Ross, the 14 year old girl who comes to settle her fathers affairs and extract vengeance on his killer.
The dialogue is a bit stilted and with a reason. It nicely approximates the speaking style of the 1800's while feeling a bit overly formal, something the Coen brothers put to great comedic use.
It's a great movie on both a comedic and dramatic level and brings a freshness to the western genre that has been missing for years.
This film also showcases the talents of Jeff Bridges and his Rooster Cogburn might just land him an Oscar.
Dickens wrote a ghost story, not a Christmas story in "A Christmas Carol" and its been too long since someone realized it. This time around the movie sticks with Dickens pretty closely.
Jim Carrey gives a wonderful performance as not only Scrooge but as the ghosts of Christmas past and present. The 3D is absolutely eye popping and the action never stops.
It is not a show for little kids, but the story is neither. The book is about mortality and what to do with the brief life each of us has been given. In that respect this version succeeds with gusto.
A Christmas Carol is a rollicking thrill ride, an artistic triumph and true to Dickens' book all at the same time and that's a delightful gift for any Christmas.
If you like Quentin Tarantino you will love this movie. If you are luke warm on him like me you will enjoy the film, but leave feeling it has some serious shortcomings.
From the start it let you know it's a fairy tail. "Once upon a time...." is a setup for a very fictitious account of WWII. I can live with that and as far as an interesting story it does work well. However, the gore fest that is a Tarantino film is getting old.
Overall, if you leave your brain and stomach at the door, it's a fun movie, that is if you idea of fun is exploding spleens and scalped heads.
