Love the simulcasts - as close to being there as you can get, if your movie theater has decent sound. This cast is really good -- especially Eric Owens as Alberich. The orchestra work is superb - important because the orch. is as important as voice in Wagner. As to the set: well, it did dazzle at first, then I think became a distraction, waiting to see what "it" would do vs. the actual cast - after a couple of hours, kind of monotonous because there was no depth to the field on the stage, all was "backstopped" by "the machine". Also, think they should have NOT explained about the set in the canned piece prior to the performance - would have gotten more "wow" factor, maybe for Walkure, put it at the end for those who want to stay after and see how it works??
I haven't read any of the books, and knew nothing about the story, but I still found this very enjoyable - made me think, laugh, and feel sad - so, emotional, even though I was only getting to know the characters as they appeared, and not through the books. I think if you see the movie, you will then be inspired to definitely go and read the books. Also, I thought the acting was superb - very natural and real, and it would have been very easy to overplay these roles.
