The cast was excellent, and Brian Hymel was exceptional. The single advantage of cinema opera is the closeup. When the performers are excellent actors, the passions of each scene are fully appreciated. With static staging, the audience can choose to focus on particular aspects of the performance. A good portion of this film provided full stage perspectives. I did not find the cuts intrusive and the closeups heightened the enjoyment of certain scenes. Forget the 3D, it's a gimmick that adds nothing to the experience.
Another triumphant recreation of the Harry Potter books. With the exceptions of Books 1 & 2, the books are just too grand for most faithful screen adaptation, so critical decisions must be made in order to fit them into films of less than three hours. As an avid HP reader, I liked the editing of DH1.
None of the minor characters were reintroduced, This viewer knew who they were. I can only guess that the uninitiated would be put off by this. That said, the action flew by. All of the important elements of the plot were included, with one exception, which I assume will be revisited and more fully developed in part 2.
