Woke me out of my stupor

This movie woke me out of my middle class stupor pretty quickly. This is raw, no holds bar, gut renching stuff. Although it had potential to fall into some sort of stereotype about inner city life, it instead crosses all socioeconomic boundaries with its subject matter, the transformation of the central character and hope that finally emerges in an embattled yet unshakable form. Go, but be forewarned, this a brutal yet convincing movie about someone who is not only given nothing, but practically has it all taken away before she's 16. I say practically, only because she has something in her that sees through everything that tries to destroy her. This is a convincing allegory of good being triumphant over evil.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is an amazing movie on many levels. Dramatic, romantic and suspenseful. While the depiction of the slums and the adversity there could have overwhelmed the movie, it doesn't. It instead drives the characters, the plot and the action to the finale. The movie could have simply been depressing given the subject matter, but ends up being uplifting. It fulfills its destiny as the best film this year.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
