Jeff Bridges is perfect as Rooster Cogburn, disappearing completely into the role. Except for one time when he smiles hard enough that his dimples show, there is no hint of the Bridges we've known in other films. Josh Brolin and Matt Damon are also nearly unrecognizable as the actors we know from other films. The young lady playing Mattie looked like a 14 year old, unlike Kim Darby, and clearly displayed the pluck, courage and true grit her character needed.
I loved that they kept the iconic "reins in the teeth, both guns blazing" scene, and Bridges had a wicked grin on his face that made it even more enjoyable. The only thing I missed from the old "True Grit" was Cogburn jumping his horse over the four rail fence. But since there weren't a lot of four rail fences in that area back then, I suppose that was considered unnecessary. This is a wonderful film - go see it on the big screen!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

FINALLY WB gets it right! The film was long enough (HOORAY!) and included enough of the story from the book to make good sense to those of us who've read the books. It also told the story in such a way that those (like my husband) who've never read the books "got it" (except he didn't understand why the kids didn't fight the Snatchers - I told him I felt the same way in the book, but I've probably forgotten something from the book that would've explained it.) At any rate, the film is brightly lit enough, which can't be said of HBP, which is great. The location shots are gorgeous. I would like to know how the Burrow is standing after being burned down in the last film - and if it was rebuilt, why is it still so rickety looking? That's my only real complaint.
My highest praise goes to the trio - their acting in this was superb. It's obvious they're all adults now and taking their craft seriously. Beautiful film, wonderful acting - a real treat of a movie.
