Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 3D: This one surprised me. Like so many other sequels, I figured that it would be more of the same as well. Wow! Was I impressed! This one actually explained what was going on. It answered a lot of burning questions. I gave it 4 stars in every category, or a high 8 out of 10. I have 3 words for you. GO SEE IT !
Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D: I knew what this was going to be like before I went to see it. And, it was just that, more of the same. I gave it 5 stars on action, 4 stars on interest and plot, but only 2 stars on clarity. It had a great theme and really makes you wonder if the appearance of Buzz Aldrin (2nd man to walk on the moon) in the movie was just to draw viewers or if there was a deeper purpose behind it. The movie also had a really good romantic twist to it that seemed to pull the plot together better. The only glaring negative that completely overwhelmed and frustrated me was that I never could figure out who to root for in the battles. They should have made all Decepticons red and all Autobots blue, or something like that. Perhaps if I were 50 years younger or had read all the comics, I may have been able to recognize them better. But, that confusion takes a lot away from the enjoyment of the movie, unless the only reason you are there is for fighting and violence and don’t care who wins. I didn’t stay to see if there was a snippet scene at the end of the credits because I figured that I wouldn't understand it anyway. I gave it 4 stars simply because of the action, or 7 out of 10.
Super 8: I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, but was very disappointed. I never did get a clear vision of the entire monster. The action shots were so quick, I couldn’t tell what was happening until I saw the results. The entire plot was obscured by the uncertainty of what was going on. I wasn’t even sure whether they were trying to portray the monster as good or evil. The only thing clear is that it was reactionary. I got the same feeling of not knowing what was happening or who to in the Transformer movies. But, kids seem to like pure action today no matter what is really happening. That is probably why there are so many high marks given this movie from other User Reviewers. I could not believe the number of 5 stars. I personally don’t see this movie in the same league with Star Wars, Star Trek, or any of the all-time classics that truly deserve 5 stars. As a matter of fact, I give it a very low 3 stars, or 4 out of 10, as sci-fi movies go. If I will not see a movie a second time, then I don’t recommend it to my friends. I will not see this one again.
X-Men: First Class: It’s great to see a movie done this well that goes back and explains the origin of a very popular series. It was successfully done in the Batman series and the Star Trek series, and I believe it was successfully done again here in X-Men as well. It always takes a little adjusting time to adapt to new faces for old familiar characters. However, the acting was very well done. And, there was plenty of suspense and action. If you are an X-Men fan, this is a MUST SEE. If you just like Science Fiction, you will not be disappointed. Go see it! I rate it 4 stars, or 8 out of 10. There is no snippet scene at the end of the credits.
Pirates of the Caribbean-On Stranger Tides: A lot of people were saying that this movie wasn’t nearly as good as the others in the series. I beg to differ. If you are a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, you will like it as well. There is not quite as much action as the other movies. But, Johnny Depp made up for it by being at the top of his game. And, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane made great rival pirates. I thought the mermaid attack was vastly overdone. However, the initial mermaid scene with Gemma Ward was really great. Being a leg man, mermaid scenes are not at the top of my list. However, Gemma pulled it off great and I found myself leaning over the boat to get closer to her. I may just go to the pool tomorrow. This movie was very good, but in my opinion, it does not rate up there with the all-time greats. Go see it. I rate it 4 stars, or 7 out of 10. And, don’t leave when the credits roll, as there is a small snippet scene at the end of the credits.
THOR – 3-D: I was really excited about going to see THOR. Therefore, I saw it on the first weekend. The good news is that I loved the movie. The bad news is that I wish I had seen it on Friday night, so I could have warned you earlier not to leave when the credits start rolling. As it is with many movies based on Marvel Comics, there is an important snippet scene at the end of the credits that gives key information about the next movie in the series. I thought the casting was great. Anthony Hopkins (Dr. Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" and Zorro in "The Mask of Zorro") is always great in whatever he plays in. Craig Hemsworth played a convincing Thor. Natalie Portman (Isabel in “Your Highness” and Padmé in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith) was her own gorgeous self. There was plenty of action. There was a growing romance. And, there was a great moral lesson about learning from one’s mistakes and actually acting on it, which seems to be a rare thing these days. The movie is a little more serious than some of the others, which gives it more credibility. But, the 3-D effect was only moderate for most of the movie. Only in the final scenes when it spans the cosmos did it warrant spending the extra money for the 3-D effect. I would recommend this movie to most anyone. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars, or 8 out of 10.
Fast Five: The best part of this movie is the head on confrontation between Vin Diesel (of XXX fame) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (of The Scorpion King fame). It was like watching Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting it out. Who do you root for? The entire cast was superb. It would be hard to find a more action packed film. And, you can always measure the rate of excitement by the speed in which one chews his/her popcorn. The movie provided great entertainment and fantasy, as most of these types of movies do. The magical bullets always seem to hit their targets when shot by the good guys, while the ones shot by the bad buys always seem to miss. The robbery and chase scene at the end of the movie was totally unrealistic, but great fun. The good guys (the robbers-hmmm) blow up the side of the police station housing a massive vault, pull it out of the building with two cars, and lead the police in a fantasy chase scene through the streets of Rio while dragging this huge vault behind them as it crashes through buildings, cars, a bank, etc. without hurting anyone. Of course they still maintain their distance ahead of the pursuing police cars throughout the entire chase scene until they get trapped on a bridge. I would recommend this movie to most anyone who does not have a problem with the good guys being bad guys too. Or, is it the bad guys being good guys? Then again, who cares these days? Nobody can tell the good guys from the bad guys even in real life anymore. Go see it!
Hanna: I was very disappointed with this movie. The action scenes were its only redeeming grace. Even Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana couldn’t save this one. It’s not that their acting was poor. It’s just that even the best actors and actresses have to have good lines to say and a good storyline to follow. I thought that Saoirse Ronan did a really good job playing the part of Hanna and I loved the fight scenes. It’s a shame that the writing was so bad. They could have done much better with the material and the talent they had. The leading actors turned a bad storyline into an average movie, and kept it from being 2 stars. However, they couldn’t make it a good movie.
Adjustment Bureau: I went to this movie expecting to see a good movie. I came out with the feeling that I had just seen a great movie. I wouldn’t quite put it at the same level as Matrix. However, I was extremely pleased and will definitely see it again. There was great acting, plenty of mild action, very good romance, and it left you with a good feeling. The only weak link was the role of the Bureau, and how it manipulated and controlled the life of each person. It makes you think that there is really no such a thing as free will and every little detail of your life works according to a plan. And, when you try to change it, a roadblock pops up. If so, then what’s the purpose of the journey?
Sucker Punch: I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. However, I left the theatre wishing I hadn’t expected so much. The best part of the movie was shown in the previews. It was like a long roller coaster ride. It took a long time to get to the top of each hill, but the good parts were over really quick. When there was action, it was great. The dragon scene was particularly good. When there was no action, it was boring. The women were gorgeous throughout the entire movie. The storyline was very weak and I had trouble following what was going on at times. If all you care about in a movie is action and/or attractive ladies, then you will love the movie and no-doubt rate it a 4 or 5. I had trouble rating this movie even a 3. Had it not been for the great looking women and the action scenes, I would have given it a 2. I will not see it again.
