Immortals: I tend to like movies like this. However, this was just another one of those movies. I didn’t think that it held a candle to Clash of the Titans in 2010. However, if you like a lot of action and blood and guts, then you will like this one. If you don’t like to see heads roll, then pick a different movie. I gave it 3 stars, or 6 out of 10.
The Three Musketeers: The story line was pretty much the same as the 1993 movie version. Although, this one added a twist, using hot air balloons as a battle fleet. Had I not seen the earlier version, I would have liked this one much more. However, it’s just another case where somebody piggy backs off on an earlier idea. This is getting really old. Why make a remake of a classic unless the remake is better. It wasn’t. I did think that Milla Jovovich did a great job in this movie. If you haven’t seen the earlier version, then you will really enjoy it. If you have seen the 1993 version, then the new one is not nearly as good as the old one, but is still good entertainment. My rating is 3 stars, or 6 out of 10.
The Thing: Had I not seen the 1982 Kurt Russell version of the of the original 1950 movie The Thing From Another World, it would have been a better movie. However, having seen that version, it was just more of the same. I really liked the 1950 version best. Monsters taking over somebody else’s body in human form is getting really old. You’d think that somebody could be more creative and think of something new. But, as prequels go, it was pretty good. The story goes back to when the creature was first found, which pre-dates the 1982 movie. It fills in some blanks and relates back to the 1982 movie at the end. If you have nothing better to do, go see it. If you really want to see a good movie, rent the original 1950 DVD. My guess is that some of you didn’t know that James Arness (Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke fame) played the role of The Thing in the original version!) I gave the current movie 3 stars, or 3.7 out of 10.
Real Steel: It is very rare that I rate a movie 5 stars. This is one of those movies. It had everything; great action, a growing romance, a great storyline, a great subplot, great acting, and whatever else you want to use as a criteria. I gave it 5 stars in every category. I can’t say enough about this movie. Go see it. I recommend it to everyone who is not offended by violence. My rating is 5 stars, or 10 out of 10.
Contagion: I suppose that if I had not seen so many movies with the same theme that I would have liked this movie better. The truth is that it is a good movie, but not a great movie. It’s the same old theme and the same old predictable ending. Ho. Hum. Why can’t people be more original today? Is it just that they have run out of subjects? Are they just flat lazy? Or, is it that people are just not nearly as creative as they were in the old days. Reoccurring themes, remakes of the same movies, and the same predictable endings makes for boring movies. I would recommend this movie to anyone who has not already seen a “virus gone wild” movie before, or to someone who is totally bored to death and has a $20 bill just burning a hole in their pocket, and begging to be spent. Remember, there are other good movies out there! This is one of those times when the Users had a more realistic rating of the movie than the actual critics. I gave it 3 stars as an average movie, or 6 out of 10.
Warrior: I would have preferred a boxing movie, but I must admit that I really enjoyed this one. It had a lot in common with the Rocky movie. Like Rocky, it has a slow developing plot. Like Rocky, the wife of the good guy refused to watch him fight in the beginning. Like Rocky, somehow a couple of fighters happened to get a shot at the title without really earning it, including the star. And, of course, like Rocky, the big villain was a seemingly invincible Russian fighter. Furthermore, if you follow typical movie ethics, the outcome should not be a surprise to you either, as those ethics would clearly dictate who the winner will be before the final fight is ever fought. Even so, the movie had the same magic that both Rocky and Cinderella Man had. I’d recommend it to all fight lovers and I gave it 4 stars, or 8 out of 10.
Crazy, Stupid, Love: I don’t really like love stories much. It’s because they are too real, and guys seem to have trouble dealing with reality of the heart. We’d rather see an action thriller where the good guy shoots a couple hundred bad buys without getting a scratch himself, which could never happen in reality. However, occasionally a love story comes along that I really like. Crazy, Stupid, Love is one of those movies. A great cast, a great storyline, and situations we can all relate to make this a top rated movie. I am going to see this again and take plenty of notes. Next, I’m going add this film to my other date training films, such as “What Women Want” and “Ghosts Of Girl Friends Past”. Then, I’m going to a bar. Wish me luck! (4 stars, or 8 out of 10)
Cowboys & Aliens: With all the hype, you would have thought this would be another Star Wars. It seems that every movie that has a big name in it is being billed as the movie of the year these days. Well, I enjoyed the movie, but would hesitate to pay money to see it twice unless I had a really hot date, who just had to see it. So, from that perspective, this movie may be a great way for a guy to entice a lady to actually see a pretty decent Sci-Fi flick with him. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig would be great incentive for her. However, the plot was really flakey. The aliens had a solid fuel rocket that didn't look capable of getting out of this solar system, must less bring them here from another galaxy. They also had fighter planes (with no shields) that would actually swoop down and lasso people on the ground, jerking them up at breakneck speeds, and somehow harmlessly delivering them into their speeding spacecraft. The aliens lassoed more than the cowboys did. The aliens were also huge and bulky, but had catlike speed and agility. They didn’t even have guards at the entrance to their ship. Hmmm. O.K. Who cares? If you’ve got a hot date, who’s looking at the movie anyway? Obviously, I didn’t have a date. So, I had to watch the movie. I would recommend it to guys with dates. I gave it 3 stars, or 6 out of 10. There goes another $20 bucks!
Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Great movie. It was even better than I expected. There were a few inconsistencies, like where did all those “smart apes” come from when only a few were exposed to the (?-not telling). But, it did make for a great movie. The apes stole the show. The humans were typical people in control. The security reminded me of today. The results, well, go see the movie. I recommend it for all ages. There is a snippet scene, but it is very early in the credits, so you don’t have to wait until the end to see it. There is only one. And, the snippet scene gives a very strong clue as to how the apes were able to get complete control. This movie is set up for several sequels. I gave it 4 stars, or 7 out of 10.
Green Lantern 3D: For the life of me, I don’t understand why many of the other critics turned on this one. It had everything, action romance, suspense, a great storyline, etc. And, it had the same impact on me that the original Batman and Superman did. It’s also perfectly set up for a sequel. I read the critics and decided to wait on this one because there were so many other good movies out there to see. I almost waited too long. I highly recommend finding somewhere that it is still playing and seeing it right now, before it leaves all the theatres. It’s only the 2nd new movie this year that I have given 5 stars to. I also gave it a10 out of 10.
