If you've read the book, I'm sorry. This will definitely let you down. Zack Snyder does a brilliant job of adapting the visuals of the graphic novel but fails to even come close to portraying the complexity and depth of the story. In worrying so much about capturing iconic images from the source, Snyder overlooks the necessity to boil things down and make this a movie. The action jumps all over the place to include different aspects of the comic without weaving a cohesive and compelling storyline. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't come close to doing justice to the brilliant groundbreaking work that it was adapted from.
What Nolan has done with his Bat-franchise is no less a feat than what Coppola accomplished with the Godfather films. Like those the first film is essential in approaching the follow-up but the sequel shines brighter than its sire. This film is unquestionably the pinnacle of the superhero genre. It reflects the greatest aspects of it's origins in comic books while rising to a level few films ever attain. it is poignant and deeply faceted, filled with brilliant performances and framed by a truly breathtaking director. I expected a lot when I took my seat. On top of the excitement I had felt since leaving the theater after Batman Begins was the anticipation of what will be remembered as Heath Ledger's defining performance. This film met my unrealistically high expectations and surpassed them. I can't wait to see it again.
