Good but Flawed

There were far too much time looking at closeups, most of them from a low angle. Peter Sellars must never again be allowed to direct the HD transmission. James Maddalena's voice seemed to strain at times. And there were points during the show when I felt the stage business for the main characters was a bit strange, e.g. Kissinger lying on a bed in a prolonged embrace of one of the Chinese women. And what was Nixon pulling a gun all about?
But overall, I'm glad I saw it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It's highly enjoyable to see such a well-acted movie giving us a glimpse of the royal family of England in the turbulent events of the 1930's. This forms the context of the engaging story of "Bertie" the Duke of York and future King George VI and his friendship with Lionel Logue, who enabled him to overcome a terrible stammer. It's a great period piece with a great story — really heart-warming.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Superb "Don Carlo"

One could quibble with some details of the direction — the somewhat rough way Carlo and Posa interacted, or Carlo being killed rather than drawn to safety by Charles V, for example — but the music was so beautiful and so gloriously sung, especially by Marina Poplovskaya and the basses, that it was one of the finest opera performances I have ever seen or heard.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great Singing, Distracting Set

The singers and orchestra were in fine form, and the production is well worth seeing. But "the machine" that was the set was very distracting — probably even more than it would have been if they hadn't made such a big deal of it in the preliminary show. Realistic special effect can enhance a performance, but abstract ones that take over the show detract from it as true theater.
I do recommend the performance, but I wish it had been better staged.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
