Great sets, excellent performances. This abridged version, sung in English, hits all the highlights and is very accessible. My only criticism, a small one, is the wish for more long shots to show the sets rather than so many close ups on the singers.
The movie is entertaining, but needs to be viewed as revisionist history if you're a serious fan of the old. Take if for what it is; overdone, bombastic, full of needless special effects, the stuff audiences expect these days. Ah, well. Same thing happened in comics around 10 years ago to attract new readers, recycling old characters with fresh origin stories, etc. It's still entertaining.
Taken by itself, the movie is entertaining, visually striking, and explains itself pretty well, but there were several important pieces that were left dangling and unexplained. Compared to the graphic novel, it pales. The movie faithfully follows the plot line, but cannot capture the layers and cross references / running bits of humor and self-commentary that make the book so outstanding.
