The FX are definitely the star of this film. Some really cool effects but nothing we really haven't already seen before. I guess I'm still more easily impressed when FX are done on what look likes video instead of film. It gives such an amazing sense of realism to the film. However, that's where my liking of this movie ends. The story line was simple but gave no insight to what was happening. I guess the story was supposed to be more about the friendship between the lead characters, but I was left wondering what it was all about when the movie ended.
I really enjoyed the campy fun of this movie. The MAJOR throwbacks to the Muppet's TV show and old Muppet movies was awesome. It was nice to hear the audience laugh almost continuously through the entire movie. There were certain things I would have liked to have seen done differently as far as the storyline with Miss Piggy & Kermit was concerned, and there was one little song about "being alone" that seemed to just come out of nowhere and was rather obscure....but all-in-all this movie had heart, charm, and lots of laughs for young and old.
I loved the first two Paranormal Activity movies. Loved them. So I was extremely excited to see this one. Everyone at work that had seen it before me was buzzing about what an awesome film this was...one guy had actually seen it twice. So imagine my surprise when I saw it, only to feel like it was more of the exact same, but for some reason less effective. The one thing that bothered me (this is not a spoiler) is that the film is supposed to be set in the 1980s...and filmed on VHS tape....so why didn't it look like it? It looked as if it was on digital HD and shot with steady cams! There were a couple of moments that were scary, but on the whole I felt this movie was a dud. At one point near the end of the film, during what should've been the climactic ending, there was a scene that got a laugh from the audience (and it was supposed to be "terrifying") because it was so bad. Wish I would've just stopped with the first 2 films.
This movie could've been a stand alone film, without there ever having been any Shrek films, and I would've still loved it! I saw this movie two nights in a row because I laughed so much the first time. It wasn't a non-stop, laugh a minute riot, but it was fun, super entertaining, with a few extremely funny "laugh out loud" moments. Very much like the Shrek movies, this film has adult humor and kid humor alike. I feel like Dreamworks will do another sequel (or 2) of this film... and they SHOULD!
Ok, with all the hype and the cool previews for this film, I was rather excited to see it. But now that I've seen it, I'm not sure what all the hype was about. I didn't feel it was anywhere as good as the movie "300", and the story line was VERY VERY thin. I'm not even sure how to review it. It was nice visually and had some interesting moments, but it just felt long and drawn out for no reason.
As other reviewers have said, the movie does start of a little slowly, but as the movie progresses you realize this is for a reason...to make the ending even more climactic. I saw this movie 2 nights in a row, simply because it brought tears to my eyes at the end. Definitely a feel good movie with some incredible special effects. The edgy score by Danny Elfman was unlike anything I've ever heard him do for film scores. Also, you totally forget that a lot of the effects in the film are computer graphics and you really appreciate the fact that many of the effects and robots are actually real. This movie has the feel of Rocky, Transformers, and Karate Kid all rolled into one, and literally made people in the audience cheer! I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone.
I've seen this movie twice in the past week. The first time I kept finding it a little bit hard to follow just because I couldn't keep up with everyone's names. However, the 2nd time was much more enjoyable. I really really liked this movie. Let's start with what I didn't like: There were many moments that seemed like the director was really trying to force the moment. It almost seemed a little melodramatic. And some characters were very underdeveloped. What did i like? Everything else! There are some amazing standout performances in this movie. Viola Davis and Emma Stone give two FANTASTIC performances in this film, however the entire ensemble really gives their all in making this movie so heartwarming while being heartwrenching. Jessica Chastain won my heart in this film. She was so great. Reminded me a little of Daryl Hannah in Steel Magnolias. And Octavia Spencer was a wonderful choice for the comic relief. Rounding up the cast is Bryce Dallas Howard who plays her hateful character to a tee. Also Allison Janney, Cicely Tyson, and Sissy Spacek give some incredibly moving performances in this film. This movie is a great study in film acting...so many generations of wonderful actresses all giving stellar performances. And, as an added bonus, the score by Thomas Newman is wonderfully haunting.
I had heard before I went to see this film that it was indeed the same premise just set in a different location. And with the exception of a couple of very minor plot twists, my friends were correct. The unfortunate part was that the funny moments seemed few and far between with only a couple of laugh out loud moments thanks to Zach Galifianakis. I'd say save your money and go see Bridesmaids instead!
