Two good movies in one

"Up in the Air" is really two good movies in one. On the first level, it's the entertaining but moving story of a hollow man, someone who starts out with less attachment to other human beings than he has to his frequent flier miles. Through the arc of the story he sees and feels what is missing, and he reaches out to someone, only to find that connecting with another person is harder than passing through an airport security line. The second movie is like a powerful, telegraphic documentary (with some real documentary elements) about the experience of being fired. We have enough exposure to a roster of discarded people that we have a visceral reaction to their plight.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The main thing about this movie is that it's a chance to see a superb performer at work. Behind-the-scenes is almost always more revealing than a finished performance, and this film--while it doesn't expose any deep layers in Michael Jackson's psyche--lets you witness great talent. Knowing that MJ is gone makes "This Is It" very poignant, too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
