I've never seen any other film adaptation, but I declare this Jane Eyre (2011) a re-watchable gem of a movie. Once it is open to wider release, I will see it again and purchase the DVD so I can see the extras and deleted scenes.
The director did a wonderful job of condensing the novel into a terrific movie without losing the heart or intensity of the characters. When Jane and Mr. Rochestor (Mia Waskikowska and Michael Fassbender) are on the screen together, the movie absolutely crackles with the electricity between them. Their most tense encounters ended with the audience exhaling as hard as Jane. Jamie Bell also did an excellent job playing St. John, the pastor who tries to court Jane into becoming a missionary and his wife. When she turns him down because of her love of Rochestor, his visible anger and outburst is unexpected yet believable for Jane Eyre has a way of bringing people's most passionate emotions (good or bad) to the surface.
I read Jane Eyre for the first time in the fall of 2009, and it immediately became my favorite novel of all time for Jane was a smart, determined, scrappy girl. She never let her circumstances destroy her. She is one of my biggest literary heroes (and as a librarian I've read a lot of books), and Mia Wasikowska did her a great justice. Jane Eyre isn't the tale of a brooding man with a secret, it is the coming of age tale of young woman determined to live her life as her heart (and conscience) commands.
First of, I'm not a Twi-hard fan and I've only read the first book which I found painfully written. However, I am a fan of the movies. (Go team Jacob.) Eclipse is full of romance, passion, humor and action. It's the first of the movies where the chemistry between all three main characters were clicking on all cylinders. I enjoyed the dichotomy between Jacob and Edward--the hot blooded vs the cold blooded.
The backstories of some of the Cullen clan was good, added to the plot, and didn't feel shoehorned in. It set up the battle with the evil vamps quite nicely. The fight scenes were pretty awesome considering it was PG-13, and the wolf CGI has gotten much better.
The the tongue-in-cheek dialogue gives this movie it's humor. It's not a parody of the series yet realizes some of the absurdity surrounding the Twilight Fan mayhem.
