While Richard Gere is fine, it's the story and the performances that make this film a fine nights' entetainment. Specifically the orbiting cast is among th best I've ever seen: Tim Roth, Brit Marling, Nate Parker and, above all others, Stuart Margolin as the lawyer.
The plot revolvs around the pull between loyalties, money and family and what some are wiling to do to keep or dispatch each. Despite a speech tht Gere gives in which he is uapologetic about his lust for money he does car for is wife, his lover, his children and his friends. The question is where do each of these fit in his chotic life?
Pros well paced, great actors

The Artist....a beautiful film filled with layers of homage to an era, actors, studios, filmamking in general, etc is spot on. There are so many refences that you almost mis the amazing acting and treatment from the talented director and film team here.

When leaving the theatre with companions it is natural to bounce thoughts off one another. The thoughts we both had were that the filmmaker indulged in a free-form lava lamp of images and sound that were somewhere between National Geographic specials and 2001: a Space Odyssey.
Every high schooler thinks about this stuff but since when must we spend our money to watch this trite stuff on screen. I am certain that (director) Mr. Malick thinks about the big questions as well but this amalgam of new-age nonsense and bloated Christianity is just plain dull. Long scenes of Jupiters moons, Saturns rings, cloud nebula, rushing waters, flickering flames and shadows do not make me think the director is arty: merely focused on old stuff. Trouble here is that the film was well crafted, lavish to watch, generally well-acted and could have been a thought-provoking piece rather than a stoners view of a lava lamp.
That is, we really wanted to enjoy it but if this is what passes for deep one had better check the accreditation of the institution.
This lovely film explores the idea of life as a chess game from every angle. From the interplay of the characters to the manner of interaction to the game itself and how we are merely players.
The director uses not just the game as metaphor but the very movements of each actor is dictated by the chess board. Lives are not easily pigeon-holed and what appears simple often has some greater definition or stategy. The notions of sacrifice, family, usefullness are explored in a calm, sophisticated and generous manner.
Well worth the hours to watch, absorb, reflect and discuss after.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Two unlikeable people act out a pretense of having a long term relationship in Tusacny. Too bad the wonderful location, good direction and nice acting is wasted on a dull-as-hell film. I am not a lover of Hollywood action films but this had all the pizzaz of a high school drama class.
