This is one of Breillat's best films. Asia Argento is stunning. In a way, she is miscast, given her overwhelmingly contemporary demeanor. At the same time her character is so beyond her times that Argento's performance works. She is such an enticing blend of independence, madness and smoldering sexuality that we can understand why the protagonist is irresistibly drawn to her. A slow film, yes, but I enjoyed the unhurried scenes and the experience of witnessing the intimate unfolding of this eighteenth century tale of amour fou.
