As Riveting As Being There

I actually attended the 1973 Kentucky Derby; the race that Secretariat won for the first leg of the triple crown. As I recall everyone's attention was on the competition between "Big Red" and Sham. The excitement was so intense that even the "Infield" crowd quietened down so that they could hear the track announcer call the race (an unusual event at the Derby). As usual, the fence just inside of the rail was packed with spectators trying to get a glimpse of any part of the blurred forms of muscularly developed horseflesh with their jockeys onboard wearing the colorful silks of the respective horsefarms.
My most vivid memory of the 99th Kentucky Derby was the thundering hoofbeats of the horses as they approached the first turn after passing the Grandstand; just a deafening roar.
The movie's depiction of the Derby was as close to the actual event as I can recall. The clothes, the ladies' derby hats, the haircuts, even some of the Churchill Downs officials were as authentic as it comes.
The true winner of the movie, in my opinion, was the racing sequences. What competition, what close-ups! Fabulous! It just didn't appear to be scripted!
Finally, I have to say that above all: DISNEY Does It Again. No one else could have taken the interconnected lives of humans and animals and turned it into the family entertainment that leaves all of us in anticipation of their next epic film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
