I really love the Twilight books and movies, But to me the last movie Eclipse was a slight disappointment. Its not that I hated it, But it left me feeling as if too much was being left out. For the people that haven't read the book this film was probably epic and for the ones who read it a along time ago they may have forgotten some of the lines that really made us readers laugh out loud.
Maybe if I hadn't read the books the movie would have sufficed until the release of the next movie Breaking Dawn, But I guess the reason I feel this way is because the book had so much more about the passion Edward and Bella really felt. It showed the jealousy between Jacob and Edward, Although it was in the movie it was toned down quite a bit (quote at bottom). The book also told us more of the Friendship & love that Bella felt for her new family and the way they felt about her. In the books we learned about Charlie liking Alice, But wishing Edward would drop off the face of the planet and that part was good because it showed that he was like any other father worried that his only daughter would soon be running off with a guy. Making friends with Alice was his way (so he thought) to keep tabs on whats going on, Plus this shows how well Alice can get along with humans although never remembering being human. In the movie there was just one small scene with Charlie and Alice and it seemed deliberately put there to make you know that Charlie likes Alice and vise versa, But it was lacking the why or how that came to be. Some of that was also left out of New Moon, But it was not as noticeable because at that point it wasn't necessary to know that. Now that it was something that needed to be portrayed it was sort like a fact thrown in but not shown. I also liked the part in the book where Jasper and Emmett made a bet over how many people Bella will kill when she becomes one of them. It may seem trivial I guess, But to me it shows that the Cullen's although not human have some enjoyment that normal siblings feel. It makes it easier to relate with them since in the first two movies all we see of Jasper is that he is not as used to his contact with humans and that he can also alter moods, But we don't see any look into his life with his family when she's not around. Also it makes you remember that Emmett likes Bella, But with his non serious nature he will always be giving her crap until she becomes one of them and probably even long afterward. Its who he is. I also was sad that a lot of the humor was lost, Because although Eclipse was a battle for Bella's life the book was more like real life even when your facing problems there is still some humor about it no matter how sarcastic it might be.
Parts that I think defiantly belonged in the movie:
Bella and Edward passing notes in class about what would happened if the plane had crashed (Quote at bottom) when they went to visit Renee. I guess It needed that part because you finally get to see Bella and Edward interacting without as much strain as in the first two books because the thirst for her blood was no longer as strong for him since he knew what being without her would be like. I also liked this part because we get to see some of Edward and Bella's sarcastic humor
The part where Jacob and Bella were discussing about werewolf's and vampires being enemy's and Bella trying to get him to see that she thinks they should get along whether thier mytical creatures or not and she's a virgo that dont plan on standing in the middle (quote at bottom) I know she mentioned being Switzerland in the movie, But unless you read the book or knew about Switzerland not getting into territory disputes you would not get the point.
The tent scene from the movie was almost perfect except for the last part. In the book when she wanted to get out of Jacobs hold in the morning she asked for a little help and Edward asked if she wanted him to keep both his arms. It showed that although he was grateful for Jacob to keep her warm he was only letting Jacob do it out of necessity and that as soon as she no longer needed him to hold her. His jealousy which he was stewing in all night got the better of him and made him make a harsh / sarcastic / yet still somewhat serious comment to Bella about her friend Jacob which even if he had a reason to he would have never made a comment like this before he met her. It shows us these new found emotions that he couldn't always control started when Bella entered his life (Gave him life sounds more appropriate) and were intensifying ever since then.
Things that were not in the movie, That could be taken out but would be missed:
Charlie driving Bella and Edward to graduation and the thought he was having about wishing Edward was in the back of the squad car for a different reason
Alice Kidnapping Bella so that she wouldn't do anything dangerous like go see Jacob.(quote at bottom) I like this because you get to know that Bella only tolerates this type of treatment from Alice because they have become real friends. In the movie it also seemed too easy for Edward to let her go to see Jacob. In the book it shows how much he fights to keep Bella away not only for her safety, But also out of his Jealousy. (quote at bottom)
The thoughts Bella had when Jacob kissed her about what their future would have been like if she hadn't met Edward.
The Quileute legends. I think they should have told the first Legend of them and how they were spirit warriors and then how they learned to shape shift into wolves not “Technically Werewolves”. The one friend who had not read the book asked about this after the movie saying something like “So has it always been in their genetics to be wolves?” She was trying to get a better understanding of them because in two movies now they have not described how they became wolves or if it had always been.
Conclusion
I know that this movie was edited to fit a certain amount of time seeing as this book was longer then the first two, But seeing the fans in the theater and the way the excitement was while they were waiting to see this movie, I highly doubt that if the movie was a hour longer that they would have complained or walked out because it was too drawn out. Most of the fans of twilight would agree whatever extra we get in knowing the caricatures of this book and the way that they all became to have the alliances and friendships they have is a bonus. Also I know this because I didn't notice a single person in the theater getting up to go to the bathroom or concessions.
I write this review not as a writer I am defiantly not a writer, But as a reader I read lots of books and the only thing that was a little off in the books was that in most books writers describe their caricatures in lengthy detail, Where as in these books you had to use a bit more of your imagination on looks, But their personalities were so strong in the books that its a shame to leave to leave out almost any part. Although I may just be biased because this was my favorite book of the whole series.
Oh yeah and before I go...To the critics of these type of books / movies that say these movies are all for the teenage girls, A group of friends and I went to the movie all of us over 25 and all of us not caring really that the caricatures are supposedly hot? And the theater was packed with not only teenage girls, But girls from teens to women in their sixties, mostly though women in their 20-30's. I think what makes us women like a story like this is that almost every girl wants a guy that is almost selfless, wants nothing but the best for her, and is willing at all cost to fight to keep her alive because he loves her that much. Maybe its because its how most of us romantic women feel about the men we love. That why we are so disappointed when most men love any good looking girl that walks by them without knowing anything about them. We all would love a guy that loves us enough to not notice any other girl with more then a passing glance. Maybe like Bella, Enough to change into a monster for that type of never ending ever so true love. But not me personally I still like being human.

Do you understand that mongrel?"
