This film kept the four of us (ages 55, 16, 12, 12) completely entertained. I agree with other reviewers that the scary scenes were too scary for the littlest children (below 8 years)--they were indeed harrowing. But we LOVED the imagination throughout the story, the animation, the little details--it was terrific from start to finish. We saw the "regular" version and didn't feel we missed the addition of 3D. Good for ages 8 and up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
