Movie with a heart

Starts out a little dark! Gru is definitly the evil villain and at first you wonder if your children are being exposed to "mean" in a scary way.
However, once the character of Gru is developed and the story begins, the movie takes off!!! My friend and I had 11 yr olds with us and they laughed and laughed! There is, of course, a short visit to the potty humor place-but it's brief and doesn't take away from the story the way it sometimes can. You really feel for these girls and even for Gru as they grow in the story-animated films don't usually tug so hard at the heart strings, but this one does and it's refreshing to have a real storyline and animated characters that have more than one dimension to them. The minions do not dominate the story, but they are SO incredibly funny! We did not see the 3D version but after the movie we see that the 3D version will have plenty to offer. I usually do not see movies more than once in a theatre, but I think this one will be the exception - the atmosphere in the theatre with all of the laughing and giggling make the experience worth going for again and this time I think we'll do 3D! Go see it- your theatre dollars will be very well spent!
