When a book is turned into a movie, the most common criticism is that the film is not being true to the book. You just can't say that about this movie. Because it sticks to the written story, it is a bit slow and at times verges on being boring. This is no children's magical fantasy. It is dark and depressing, which is what J.K. Rowling intended as Harry and his friends face the world turned upside down and governed by evil. The acting is well executed. I recommend it, but be prepared for something unlike the other Potter movies. Ultimately, I can't wait until July 2011 when the final movie is released.
This movie delivers exactly what it presents itself as - an action-packed, nail-biter. It keeps your heart beating and full attention to the very end. I love movies that keep me guessing as to "who" is really good vs bad. Well done. A movie worth seeing.
We were hesitant to see this movie due to the official critics giving it such bad reviews, but are we glad we ignored them and went anyway! For a movie targeting kids and teens, it was fantastic. It was full of fantasy, lots of action and fun special effects. There were parts that were laugh out loud funny. It may not be sophisticated enough to win over a bunch of stuffed shirt movie critics, but it certainly won over the audience it was made for! GO SEE IT!
We went in skeptical that this movie could keep our attention for two and a half hours...I mean really, how much destruction can you see without it getting old? But, WOW! Were we blown away. The special effects were truly incredible and the story was pretty decent. It kept us riveted until the end. If you like action with a double-heaping of special effects, this is the movie for you.
We love Ricky Gervais, but this movie never lived up to the hype. Very few laughs and painfully slow moving. It was never able to achieve a rhythm that grabbed the audience's imagination as evidenced by a "quiet" theater when there should have been hysterical laughter. Really disappointing. We came out wishing we had seen something else.
We found this movie to be very funny, but it really lives up to being PG-13. We saw people with younger children leave... and that was the right thing to do. Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon and the entire supporting cast were excellent. Viewers need to take this for what is was meant to be...an over the top comedy geared to adults. Don't bother if you are looking for inspirational and uplifting.
