I don't like to read movie reviews before I go see the movie because me and the reviewers don't always agree...y'know? But I heard one on the radio (NPR) and couldn't resist clicking through to another online. It seemed the general opinion of the movie was "meh." Fortunately, I wanted to see a movie and it seemed like my best bet for the weekend. Also, I'd heard that on it's opening day it had already grossed $20M and was expected to make money so off I went. I won't bore you with the artistic details. I'll just say I liked it. There was a smattering of applause at the end, and I've never heard so many positive comments walking out of a theater including "I didn't think I'd like it...but I did!!" (The 3-D effects were pretty good too!)
Pros well paced, great actors
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sometimes you just want to sit in a cool theater, munch on some popcorn with your honey and enjoy seeing a story. It reminded me of Goonies, ET, a little Close Encounters...familiar territory. Set in 1980, with a sense of nostalgia for those simpler days of muscle cars, life before video games, and being able to just being a kid. The movie moved along at a nice clip, lots of action and excitement, mixed with the goings on of suburban living. This is a movie for all age groups. Mostly it was just fun!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I love, Johnny Dep, I love Captn Jack Sparrow, I love Pirates, I really really love Penelope Cruz. But my visceral reaction: I dozed off in the middle. The pacing or the story just didn't quite hook me. Good movie, definitely worth a watch...but not as good as some of the earlier Pirates movies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Easily "Best 3D Movie Ever." The experience was immersive, not in your face (no sword poking out at the audience just "because we can.") I felt transported into another reality. You probably couldn't call it a "great" story, but it was a very good, very engaging story. Considering the length of the movie, I never found myself wondering "is it over yet?" Sci-Fi often focuses on technology either as the hero or the villian. This was a very physical, sensual movie. The next best thing to being there!
I thought the movie was very, very good...but my wife who went in with very low expectations thought it was great! The movie was action packed...the new characters are awesome: Jim Kirk is better than ever, Uhura is gorgeous, Scotty is brilliant, Spock finally got his heart, Chekov and Sulu were bright and fun...McCoy's still grumpy. It's an alternate Star Trek universe (for the purists) but a great start on the way to reinventing, refreshing and revitalizing the franchise.
I admit to being lured into the movie by the giant photo of Malin Akerman, in spandex, that's been hanging in the lobby of my local theater for at least the past 5 months. I had no idea what "The Watchmen" was about, never read the comic--my wife spent the entire movie confused about the plot (ADD). But I thought it was an epic adventure. Surreal of course, a very gritty alternate Earth, great special effects. And Malin. I'd highly recommend it to my fellow nerds. I will note that my son-in-law complained about the xpenisx to xboobsx ratio--and I can see his point. But still...Malin.
Like a roller coaster, you get brief intervals to catch your breath, and then the action starts all over again. Maybe James Bond "fans" are disappointed by this movie (and I'm not sure why)--but everybody else ought to have a great time. Daniel Craig is clearly the best James Bond since Sean Connery...but more likely, the best James Bond ever.
