I could spend a great amount of time expressing my enthusiastic appreciation for this film; however, I find short synopses best: Great Fun for the entire family. My only "complaint" is the latter part of the file was dominated by special effects: technology very nearly overwhelmed the humanity of the story - much like the theme of the story itself. Interesting. I LOVED Christopher Reeves' first couple of Superman films, and they will remain my preference, but this action-packed edition is well worth the price of admission. We'll be buying the DVD.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, effective special effects
From the opening scene to the running of the credits this film was a satisfying experience of reliving the joy of the original Star Trek yet updated of course with dynamic special effects and sound. Keith Urban nearly steals every scene he's in with his spot-on interpretation of Dr Leonard McCoy as protrayed by Deforest Kelley in the original series. The characters of Chekov and Uhura were not used to their potential; that is a weakness. This story is of course a reimagining of the original series and borrows a plot point or two from the TOS movies. Nonetheless this story stands on its own. It's just plain fun. See it before it leaves the theaters.
Pros great story, great actors, great effects, fast paced, good humor
The special effects, including the china doll, steal the film. I wasn't enchanted with the acting and the scripted story was less than satisfying. Nonetheless, it's worth seeing. You won't get the full appreciation of the special effects on the small screen.
I walked away from this film experience feeling moved and glad I saw it. I wouldn't see it again in the theaters; however, I will purchase the DVD. Was it the Best Movie of the Year? For me no. Certainly worth the nomination. Excellent story, excellent acting; however the singing was a bit of a distraction along with all the action that occurred. Too many counter actions to keep track of while listening to the songs. Some of the words of the songs got lost in the action-hard to hear. I hadn't previously seen the stage performance so was a novice to this experience. I'm not feeling certain the musical stage performance was appropriate for film. Having said that, it was a worthwhile experience. All of the lead and supporting actors' performances were outstanding.
The script/editing/story is AWESOME as so many have indicated. I saw it again today; this time in IMAX3D and I wished I hadn't. This format gave me a headache. Saw it in regular 3D the other day & it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommended. Skip IMAX 3D - too many distortions & distracts from the action..
Truly and exceptional film experience! Every vital event that I remember from the latter half of DH is represented in the film; yet it has been so well written and edited, the story flows with cadence, intensity, & intelligence. Hats Off! to Alan Rickman for a well underplayed & breath-taking performance. He deserved the Fan Award he recently received. Going back again & highly recommend to all!
Dudamel's PR is accurate. His love of his art, his vivacious personality and authentic humility create a magnetic leadership style. The LA Philharmonic Orchestra are a top-notch cohesive group that truly do make beautiful music. Brahms is not one of my favorite classical composers; however, that said, the 2 pieces produced in this program are amazing to both watch & listen. Well worth the time and effort to attend.
If you are at all interested in the Figure Skating sport, or are a historian by nature, this film is an elegant and informative opportunity to learn the personal stories of those who were directly and indirectly effected by this very unfortunate event. My only negative note was there were lots of names in the history and keeping track was challenging. Nonetheless the film focuses upon the strengths, joys, striving and successes of the featured personalities. I came away having greater respect for the participants in the sport and appreciation for the sport itself.
