Bubble Gum Iron & Exploding Stuff

I dug the the first Iron Man film, flawed as it was, because I expected a pretty looking film and nothing more. The plot wasn't genius; but the flight scenes alone were worth the ticket for me. With this sequel I wasn't expecting anything more: serviceable plot with fights and explosions, pretty graphics with pretty women. Guess what? I'm wasn't disappointed. I could complain that there was a lot less violent action in this picture to please my testosterone; but, the winks and nods at typical guy pleasures carried me. Most of what's on screen has nothing to do with guns and fists. Most of the action here is macho posturing with glances toward topics like promiscuity, alcoholism and loyalty. Favreau does an excellent job of keeping the audience in on the jokes while not focusing on them. When the guns finally come out in act three the shoot their wad pretty quick, with a little flourish. All told, there's more than a meal here for anyone who enjoyed the first film. If you don't have a nerdgasm you'll at least be entertained. I'm not sure this flick has as much to offer straight females as does does for straight males, unless they really love Downey or Rouke. The target here is unflinchingly the adolescent male in all of us, with no art clutter or intellectual bamboozling. Bring your id and leave your brain at home.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
