You had me at Del Toro directing a Godzilla movie. Honestly, I wouldn't change a single thing about this movie. It has engaging characters, excellent special effects, Ron Perlman, giant monsters and a robot using a tanker as a club to be down one of the kaiju. This is everything the American Godzilla movie should have been and more. Idris Elba owns virtually every scenes he's in. It's also nice when you've got the obligatory eye candy actors who can actually act. I know there's not much of an audience for these sorts of things in the US, but I'm hoping it busts the doors open globally, at least well enough to, if not generate a sequel, at least get the Powers That Be making movies like this again. Yes, I know Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is coming out next year, but Godzilla has enough of a built in brand to carry it. It'd be nice to see some Toho inspired monsterfests populating our multiplexes in the near future on a more regular basis.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, monsters!
This movie definitely makes it into my top 5 Bond films of all time. I'm not sure exactly where it lands on that list, but it's on there. It hits all the right notes, reintroducing old characters, introducing some new ones, incorporating an excellent soundtrack that finally makes full use of the Bond theme often and giving us an ending that carries real emotional weight, while also setting us up for some grand times in the future of this series. Javier Bardem is easily one of the best villains in the series history, and director Sam Mendes was apparently the right man to put Bond back on top. I can't wait to see what comes next. Blofeld, please.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, the music!, aston marton db5!
