Dolphin Tale almost has 'it'. That thing required to send a movie into the annal of classics. Almost. The story is good, the acting is good, the cinematography is good, the directing is good. What happened?
Well, it was good, not great. With heavyweights like Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson to carry the load this film should have gone down as the 'must see' movie of the year. But we only see glimpses of that 'morganesque' quality that Mr. Freeman brings to the big screen. Any hopes of 'Deep Impact' or 'Shawshank Redemption' quality acting from Morgan Freeman is soundly trounced during his first on screen appearance. I think he was led there and not betrayed by some inner desire toward mediocrity. Kristofferson was true to his roots with insightful one liners, but you can see he is getting tired.
The little girl was a treat, full of that high energy star dynamic that comes from being 10 years old and on her way. The boy had a lot of the subplot loaded on his shoulders and is just too young and inexperienced to carry the weight.
Dolphin Tale could have went all the way, but ran out of breath at the 10 yard line.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Could have been so much more. Good plot, good actors, good cinematics. No ticking clock. Needed more suspenseful build up and climax. Ending was anti climatic and left a lot of loose ends. Left feeling unsatisfied but glad I have guns in the house with lots of ammo and a store of canned goods and water. What would you do if 911 no longer worked and they were coming for you?
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Better Than Last But...

The movie is a must see as are all Potter flicks but there are a few things you should know.
The cast has grown up and along with an adult cast come adult themes. The youthful magic of the child Harry has vanished as fast as a Snitch, replaced by dark, sometimes terrifying situations that caused at least 3 children in the theater I was in to leave. I overheard one 6 year old saying "mommy, I'm scared' as she drug her parent out of the theater.
The battle between good and evil is not nice and not fun and this is well reflected in Harry Potter 7. It is most definitely PG13. Without giving up the plot I can tell you jealousy rears its ugly head at one point and there is some nudity which appears to be half real half CGI.
This latest installment has more of a 'Lord of the Rings' feel to it, abandoning childhood revelry and treading upon the dangerous ground of wicked adulthood.
Harry Potter and friends have grown up and so lost that childhood wonder and innocence that enchanted kids the world over. I have removed one star in homage to this lost innocence, and for that little girl who left the theater scared.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Worth A Look

The story remained loosely faithful to the original and stayed upbeat for the most part. The CGI effects were well done but no real 'wow' factor. The 3D effects were ho-hum. The ending credits were more 3D than anything in the movie.
All in all it was a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon enjoying a hotdog. Just don't make it your Saturday night at the movies.
