In the past, science fiction movies/novels not only contained incredible original settings but had a social comment. Avatar does both. The story is set in a compelling environment with a story line relevant to issues facing society today. Greed overcomes social conscience in many industries and Avatar highlights that without preaching.
One additional factor is the subtle spiritual environment that many will not relate to since it occurs in a 'primitive' society. It is worth thinking about and relating to our lives.
Loved the movie; the technology merely enhanced a compelling story.
