Best Movie This Year

There are three things that stand out about this movie: the 3D, the story, and the animation. I had been disappointed by every 3D movie I'd seen since Avatar and was worried I'd never enjoy another 3D movie again. But my faith has been restored. Also, like Avatar, this one has a great story for both adults and kids. I thought it would be difficult to animate a 3D dragon, but they had no problem with that here. They actually have several different types of dragons. Who knew dragons and Vikings would make a great story?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Disappointed in Wonderland

Aside from a brilliant Mad Hatter interpretation by Johnny Depp, I really did not find anything that I could recommend about this movie. The story is beyond predictable, and not really all that well told. The visuals are average and the 3D effects are surprisingly weak. I watched Avatar in the same theater weeks ago, I was mesmerized by Avatar; I was in disbelief that Alice was even playing in the same theater. The Red Queen is delightful at times, but is too much of a one trick pony. Actually two tricks: an over-sized head, and an "off with his head" battle call. And what was Ann Hathaway thinking? Her characterization of the White Queen is at best awkward and at worst amateurish. Overall, too much scenery, not enough story, mediocre acting (except Depp), and poor 3D.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
