What they are doing is setting up the Star Trek franchise for a new generation, and maybe that isn't bad. The choice of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk was questionable, but everyone else plays their role true to the spirit of the original characters. The movie was billed as showing us the early years of the merry band of space adventurers, but I felt it glossed over the formative Starfleet Academy part of the back story.
Instead we get another shoot-em-up that shows us that this Kirk is luckier than he is smart. Special effects dazzle us to forget that nothing of consequence really happened here. Only the development of Spock's character was done true justice. Let's hope the next film shows us more substance of these rich characters.
