Keeping a long family tradition alive, my 9 y/o son and I go to matinees together nearly every week. Some weeks he's excited at the film, some weeks I am. This one had us both excited...and did not disappoint either of us!
This is, quite simply, a Brilliant, near-perfect film with remarkable performances from every (even minor) actor...and that it spanned the generations, even more so. This is Mr. Scorcese's finest film in quite some time, and that it's a family film is amazing. His grasp of what would entertain and engross kids and adults alike was stunning.
No pandering or talking down to the kids, no silly double-entendres to keep the adults happy. Just a straightforward, beautifully told story with enough twists and turns to [pleasantly] surprise everyone. And a poignant, happy ending, too!
We will see this again, and likely own it when it is released for home consumption. It will stand repeated viewings and, I'm sure, we will find new things to love each time we view it.
Bravo!!!!!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If not for crazy Johnny...

You gotta give Johnny Depp HUGE props. He's willing to really let loose and continue pushing the boundaries of Capt Jack Sparrow, and seems to be able to keep raising the level with each film. This one's no exception.
Unfortunately, all too often in this one, he's the only thing keeping it afloat. There are short, enthusiastic bursts from Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush, but not enough. Mostly, they both seemed like they could've/wanted to phone it in. And Ian McShane, who is one of my favorite actors and is usually fantastic, sleepwalks through the film. Too bad. It's a great role...
All in all, my 9 y/o son loved it, and I liked it enough. Not the best, but I don't regret losing the 2 hours, either.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

To call this a "kid flick" would be your first big mistake. Don't make it. And don't be hesitant or embarassed to go without a kid because this is a Grade AAA adventure flick as warm, winning, and (sure to be as) enduring as Raiders or ET. And the 3D made Avatar look Amateur!
I need say nothing more than there is not so much as one flaw in this movie, period.
My 8 y/o son has read all 3 books twice and has the 4th, a do-it-yourself version, nearly completed, and LOVED them all. So to say he was anxiously awaiting this film would be the understatement of the month.
I am not that familiar with them so when I say we both oohed, aahed, laughed and grunted at all the same things, take that as testament to just how good this film really is.
It was well directed, nicely shot, cast perfectly, terrifically acted, and cohesive throughout (a rare thing in "kid flicks"). And it carried a brilliant message in a palatable form!! What more could you ask?
Take your kids and RUN to this movie!!!!
PS for the parents - It's not in 3D, which I honestly find a distraction, so not only did I enjoy it more because of this, but my son is a 3D freak, and even he didn't mind...
While I do NOT recommend taking kids under 5, (the dialog is a bit thick, and it gets a bit scary), I highly recommend this movie.
I was hesitant, as I'm not a Jim Carrey fan, but my 7 y/o insisted, so off we went. Turns out, they made a very true-to-the-book version of this wonderful Christmas morality tale. The 3D even adds to the story, and is quite good!!
I had to explain some of the dialog to my son, as they keep most of the "Olde English", but he really enjoyed AND clearly understood the point.
If they can figure out how to bring the 3D to home-theatres, or make a version without it, I'd guess this will now become an annual "event film", both in theatres and homes.
