One virtue of the Met simulcasts is the possibility of seeing great singers in close-up. That can have drawbacks however. In this opera the title role---of Octavian, the Rosenkavalier---is a "trouser role"---a female singer, in this case Susan Graham, plays a man. I suspect that the passionate opening scene involving Octavian and the Marschallin would have been played differently had it involved a male and female singer. As things were, it might have been better not to be so close to the action---to imagine what was going on rather than to see it in detail. This is a small gripe. Graham sang beautifully throughout. Renee Fleming's performance as the Marschallin was both subtle and moving.
