I'm tired of hearing people say that Avatar has predictable characters, or an unoriginal plot, or manipulative aesthetics. Most of these people couldn't name five movies with the same plot without resorting to oversimplifications. And since when did we start discounting movies because they fit into their genre or asked us to feel strongly? Stop buying the party line, and try to see this movie as a myth, a story which accesses deeply important elements of who we are: the possibility of transcending our circumstances, the condition of living in a world we are estranged from but hope to be reconciled to, the challenge of protecting our home. The image is the story. Go live in Pandora for a while and try to come back without the party line.
