Dessay and Calleja were magnificent! Donizetti's music is melodic and haunting. MANY wonderful arias, duets, trios, quartets AND an incredible harp solo!
Susan Graham and Paul Groves were sensational. Placido (now 70 years old & suffering the flu) is waning. I'm not a fan of the French ballet sequences and the set was a little odd. Otherwise the production - color scheme/costumes - was very nice. Groves friendship song; Graham's Iphigenie song; and the choral singing in the second act were sublime. Overall a wonderful performance. - Hard to believe this was first performed in France around the time of the American Revolution!
An interesting late Puccini opera - the Wild West through his eyes. Some nice melodies (some apparently stolen for Phantom of the Opera!) but nothing compared to La Boheme to my ear. We thought the encore sound quality way inferior to the live broadcasts - muffled a lot of the singing....
Not many of the lovely melodies here that I associate with Verdi, but a masterpiece nonetheless. Alagna's role restricted his usual flamboyance. Poplavskaya has an absolutely gorgeous voice with incredible range and variety. Her acting is developing. A very enjoyable 4 1/2 hours.
