The Las Vegas remake fit really well with Verdi's story. The cast was very strong. Rigoletto himself seemed somewhat diminished in this performance - not sure if that was the singer, the direction, or just the way the character is written. That being said, the music is gorgeous and many of the duets and quartets were nearly perfect.
Aida is a spectacle of an opera, with beautiful music interspersed. This production was a bit ponderous and the cast seemed under-rehearsed and not entirely in synch. Nonetheless, some of the music is fabulous and is wonderful to experience.
All the singers were magnificent! Verdi wrote pieces for all different combinations of the voices and they blended perfectly in any combination. Stephanie Blythe stole the show, but everyone was fabulous. The behind-the-scenes intermission presentations were the best ever.
Wonderful revival of the timeless story. The lead performances are stellar as are most supporting. Naomi Harris is luminous and incredibly impressive as the sweet Elizabeth. For me the opening sequences where the monster is first learning to walk and then interact with society are too long. While the acting is incredible, I got the point and would have been happy to move on. The rest of the story is told with great economy and impact - notably the Monster's time with the old blind man who teaches him to read and think. Great show!
Dessay sang beautifully despite her illness (at times it actually fit with Violetta's consumption..., but was otherwise barely noticeable...). Alfredo was no match for her. The production did not enhance the opera and at times was downright unpleasant & distracting (so you close your eyes and revel in Verdi's glorious music...)
Rene Pape was superb, very mature in this role. His agile, devilish capers are surprising & wonderful Marina P, particularly in the final act, seemed immersed in her role & sang gloriously. Jonas K's performance was more up and down but brilliant at times. The sound projection in our theater was erratic, as if certain speakers or mikes were off and on. Couldn't tell if the problem was at the Met or (more likely) at our theater. Setting the opera in the WWars did nothing for me.
A wonderful production. Anna Netrebko's voice is incredible so lovely, smooth, effortless. Her face and personality are a little too pleasant to do a totally convincing mad scene, but in every other respect her modulation and stamina were magnificent. The rest of the cast was very strong and the costumes were great.
Juan Diego was at the home birth of his son 25 minutes b/4 curtain & was up all night. He did seem a bit tired.... But the voices were the highlight of the opera - glorious voices in different combinations. The direction was excellent also. (A simple, silly plot and music that was pleasing if not memorable...)
