Emotionally gripping story. Excellent acting. I was in Family Circle at the Met on 2/24/2007 and did not know this was a Live in HD performance at the time. The letter scene was awesome. Spare sets but period costumes and minimal furnishings completely transport one to that era. I could not take my eyes off this production in the Met, on the re-broadcast on PBS and in the theater on 7/07/10. I just hope the Met does not try to modernize this gorgeous version and turn it into some perverse disaster like they did Tosca. A must see! No complaints.
Fortunately, I enjoyed this opera much more than I expected to after reading the crappy review by jeremy gerard on bloomberg.com on 4/13/10. My only criticism was with the dim appearance of the picture as compared to two other live transmissions I've seen at the same theater in NJ. I tried to get an Italian/English libretto to read before the show and couldn't find one. I truly hope as Renee Fleming mentioned in a backstage interview that this opera is repeated. I think it should be a standard in the Met repertory. I especially enjoyed the ending as it contrasted with Carmen's ending. The man rejected his seducer! What a refreshing moral to the story in these days. Additionally, the God of Heaven will always have victory over evil!
