Living near NYC, I've enjoyed live performances at the Met for over 40 years. "Hamlet" was only my second HD experience, and it was fantastic. I had seen it at the Met a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. But the telecast made a huge difference. The director wisely chose to emphasize closeups of the singers, which brought out much more detail than I had seen in person. The singers were all excellent, from Simon Keenlyside's wonderful performance in the title role right down to the two gravediggers' brief appearance. The backstage interviews were enjoyable, especially Marlis Petersen's account of how she was called to fill in as Ophelia on very short notice on opening night. There's nothing that can compare to being at the Met in person, so I'll continue my subscription - but I'll also be going to the HD telecasts for a different viewpoint.
