This movie has similarities to Abrams' TV show, LOST. A huge train wreck replaces the plane crash, old film clips hold clues about what's going on, much of the action revolves around damage caused by a mysterious "monster" that we barely glimpse until the end, and people disappear without explanation. But just as in LOST, the main attraction is the relationship and bond between the main characters and how they develop personally throughout the story. We eventually find that this is the real emphasis of the plot and all the sci-fi add-ons are just a sidelight. The kids are great, and their chaotic bickering throughout all manner of disaster lends great comic relief to balance the escalating tension.
Movie was sold out the first two times we tried to get in, and I can see why. One of the few movies we've seen that we'll go back and see again while still at the theater! Somewhat predictable storyline in some places, but that doesn't detract from the overall enjoyable plot and characters. And I can't say enough about the incredible visuals. Congrats for not using 3D as a gimmick, but to help immerse the audience in the wonder of exploring this beautiful world. The crystal clear graphics of IMAX are icing on the cake!
