What a Knock-Out!!

It scored an A- in Yahoo! user reviews, so I thought it shouldn't be half bad, but WHAT A SURPRISE! Depending on how one looks at it, the character that adds a real human appeal to this flick (although there is also a weak underpinning love story) is Max's dilemma (played by Dakota Goyo). If you take Max's performance out of this film, it goes completely flat and I suspect the screenwriters would have to embroider more drama between Charlie (xman 'Wolverine') and Bailey ("Kate" in TV series 'Lost') or push the technology aspect way up to give it more appeal to that part of the audience. As a technologist, I can't help noticing technological errors, and I found none glaring in this film! In fact, I think everything here is very doable with today's technology! So what are we waiting for- I want a front row seat in the first real Real Steel!!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Pleasantly Surprised

Was expecting a morph remake of Tron, but got a decent story line and some pretty awesome special effects, characters and combat sequences. It was like "Batman Returns:" you will encounter a scary personality like the "Joker." It was like "Bladerunner:" a companion of one of the main characters will transcend their existence. It was like "Minority Report:" the technology was off the hook! It was like "The Matrix:" each side fights for world change. I caught my mouth hanging open a few times when I "connected the dots" with the metaphors depicted on the big screen that translate well in the real world of computing (you may as well if you are in IT). Tron Legacy was smashing (literally)!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Blast from a Hottie

Angela Jolie was off da hook! One must avoid getting on her bad side in this movie! I think she took and gave more graphic beatings in this flick than all of Mel Gibson's Lethal Weapon movies combined. Lots of surprises, twists & turns in the plot. I'd like to give her credit for striking a balance between being brutally lethal and feminine (but not an evil bitc*, you know what I mean?). There were several flaws, but they did not overshadow the film. I suspect a sequel is on its way- looking for to that installment.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I guess we've come a long way from the caped crusaders from the Gotham of old, as we parlay into a whole new level of violence: foul-mouthed kids kicking, killing and blowing up adult ass. Somehow Hollywood makes this work, with lots of elements from what may be our our own high school past, a nasty villain, Nicolas Cage, who answers the question: "what kind of parent would do this to a kid?" and a host of other players you may find somewhat passe, but entertaining. Wasn't the plot I expected, but I guess that's a good thing? However, in the end I'm sure you'll agree that "Kick Ass" is a blast.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I didn't follow the cartoon series, but this was a blast, literally! Cool flying machines and high-tech gear from start to finish. Dude, I want one of those suits!!! Who needs Sci-Fi when you got GI-JOE? Looking forward to the sequel!

Great Ride!

If you’re a Star Trek fan, this long awaited motion picture event has all you’re looking for: excitement, technology, laughs and of course, Star Trek tongue & cheek! But to you, the scientist, the purist, the avid reader of great story lines and plots, conspiracy and the unimagined, you may leave the theater with the excitement of exiting a great ride at the park, but with somewhat of a stirring in your heart, wondering, “was that right?”as did I. Careful plot lines written with historical & scientific accuracy in mind is a hallmark of the Star Trek TV series. Future writers and directors should endeavor to transpose these fundamentals this to the screen, otherwise, it’s just another great ride at the park.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Action Galore; Weak Villan(s)

It begins with Bond driving furiously through a tunnel, sprayed by automatic weapon fire from the pursuing bad guys. And although it was one of many great chase scenes, I felt myself anticipating some sort of gadget or weapon to appear from his Austin Martin, to no avail. By the movie’s end, I realized that there was virtually no technology to speak of, certainly no new technology and (surprise) no Darth Vader-like villain in Quantum. Without these three missing ingredients, I felt that my entertainment experience was solely based on Daniel Craig’s excellent action sequences, and to a lesser extent, the story line, somewhat like a banana split without the banana.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
