My preconceived notion was that Avatar was too science-fiction. Had to see for myself. Human roles of the sexes are typical. Equal standing among the otherworldly Avatar sexes. Nothing new here. Visuals are amazing; you're getting what you went to the movie for in the first place - to be "transported" for a little while. A lengthy movie, the storyline is shallow - unless you are willing to look at the spiritually themed undertones - the Tree of Life, the built-in power connection (the Avatar tail) to life, Mother God, being born twice, gathering together in prayer and so on. Avatar could have had a deeper storyline but it is still a 3D flick worth seeing. I would give it a C+.
