Good Old Western

Fun seeing a good old fashioned western for a change, ala John Ford, but with a bit too formal dialogue for my taste. Maybe they really spoke that way back in the day.
Having not read the Portis novel I can't say for sure but I'm told, by those that have, that this Coen Bros. version is much more accurate than the one that brought "the Duke" his only Oscar back in '69. While all the parts are well played the show stopper, in my view, is Hailee Steinfeld as the protagonist Mattie Ross.
She chose "Rooster" because she believed he had True Grit but as this film unfolds she proves to be the one with that attribute!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Underwhelming

They say to err is human, so I guess I'm human! Boy did I err, I wasted two hours on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Certainly not the worst thing I've done but I don't think Babs and Dustin can say the same! Dustin, you're too good for this drivel and Barbra, I love you but please stick to singing.
By now you know that I really did not like this movie, so why did I give it one star? The answer to one star is one word, DeNiro! Way beneath him but I'm a fan and he did make me smile, okay laugh a little too, but he is the only redeeming feature in this entire mess.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Performance Knockout

Gritty true story played to perfection by a superb cast with Mark Wahlberg, once again, showcasing his talents as the fighter Micky Ward.
Definitely a guys film but any true movie lover can't help but be amazed by the performance of Christian Bale. His transformation into the deadbeat, crackhead brother, complete with a perfect Boston accent, is nothing short of brilliant. He steals the show and, in my view, is the odds on favorite for an Oscar as best supporting actor.
There are many wonderful performances this year in the category of best supporting actress but Melissa Leo could take it all as the self absorbed mother. I can go on and on but suffice it to say that this is a must see. Run don't walk!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This film is definitely not for everyone but a must see for movie buffs.
This is a dark, twisting and wonderfully acted story which should bring an Oscar home for Natalie Portman who is absolutely perfect as the tormented ballerina. It is superbly directed and will keep you guessing all the way home and then some.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
