Painful to watch. I am glad I went to a matinee. Storyline is very weak and full of so many holes they can't be overlooked. Shia's performance is credible and shows his further growth as an actor. I see greater roles for him in the future. The humor was non-existent as the jokes were just flat and predictable. The trailer to the Mummy 3 was more exciting than anything in this movie. It's not that Indiana Jones is a bad character, I love him, but this movie falls well short of it's predecessor's. Save your time and money and wait for the inevitable Indiana Jones Collector's set with remastered audio and digital video and alternate endings!
When I first heard Jackie Chan and Jet Li were making a movie, I thought why would Jet Li bother? I respect Jackie Chan, but he does not convey the respect for his martial arts style as I think he is viewed in the US as more of a stuntman than a fighter. What has been forgotten about Jackie Chan is his early work as Rush Hour seemed to erase it from our memory.
Chan used to be a quality martial artist but his US arc has changed his standing. Plus with this movie, it played more to Jackie's type of movie, somewhat campy and slightly comical, instead of what Jet Li has made a name for himself doing, martial arts epics. Throw in a geeky white kid, who is bullied by his peers and you have a movie trying to join two different martial art genre's resulting in a watered down version of both.
Some of the fight sequences are worth seeing. The fight between Li and Chan is at least worth a matinee ticket, but you won't find anything to wet your appetite if you are a true martial arts film fan.
I was very disappointed with this movie. Especially since the groundwork for such a wonderful story already existed. With the book and animated movie in existence, new technology should have made this movie an immediate classic. However, the animation seemed drab and did not jump off of the screen as other production companies entries seem to do. My kids fell asleep in the movie, which shows me how little they were stimulated visually as well as by story content and flow. Save your money and time and wait for the DVD release with more content to make the rental at least bearable.
