Scorsese succeeds in crafting a great stylized thriller/mystery. Rather than flirting with the unconscious from the outside, he plunges into the vicissitudes of paranoid psychosis from the inside out with the intensity and colorfulness of David Lynch and the stamina of Alfred Hitchcock. DiCaprio is brilliant as usual. Scorsese employs his signature film still effects along with lurid color and electric sound to effect the fixation of the corrupted mind. Is DiCaprio mad, or is he right about his conspiracy theory all along? It is back and forth until the end. With an awesome soundtrack and great performances from Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow, Shutter Island delivers. Scorsese fans look for a cool cameo, as well. -TH
The movie was pretty so-so. It had a big enough budget to have some stunning visuals and some nice gore, but it lacked any interesting story. It tried to be Coppola's Dracula, but unlike that movie, it's characters and story were very 2-d and the love story was lame. I jumped out of my seat a few times, but on the whole the movie was not a compelling mystery drama. Overall: C
