The monster and robot graphics were so beautifully designed and rendered and the camera moves so skillfully crafted that you really get a great feel for the scale of the characters/creatures. The same elements also give you a real feeling of being IN the movie. I gave this movie 4 stars for acting and dialogue not because they are weak, but because there simply isn't a lot of it. And the story is a very simple one; nothing complicated or involved here. That said, most of the actors gave solid performances, and Ron Perlman was... well... Ron Perlman. He's only in a few scenes but he absolutely steals the ones he's in. Very entertaining and fun to watch. Great character for him. This movie is all about the visuals and the action. It is visually stunning and the action starts almost from the first beat of the movie and only provides a few opportunities for you to catch your breath (and get to know the characters) throughout the rest of it. If you're looking for a couple hours of pure escape from reality, this is the best monster movie to come along in a loooooong time.
I saw the billboards around town and decided I would wait for the DVD to come out to watch this movie. I just wasn't interested in another comic book kids movie.
Well bless my wife for talking me into seeing it!
The now overused adjective “brilliant” is an appropriate summary for this movie.
Robert Downey Jr., in the lead role as Tony Stark, fully embraces his narcissism in playful, irreverent fashion in his best role since… well… ever!
Justin Theroux’s screenplay is smart, funny, and laced with double entendre for those paying close attention.
Jon Favreau, who also plays in a supporting role as Happy Hogan, kept the pacing quick and the comedic timing impeccable within this impressive ensemble cast. Robert’s performance was so strong it would have been easy for it to overpower the rest of the cast. But Favreau balances the performances of the rest of this all-star cast beautifully, and snappy editing keeps the viewer engaged to the point that a momentary lapse of attention will have you missing a plot point or one of numerous subtle jokes laced throughout the film.
Sam Rockwell is pleasantly annoying as the lead antagonist. He teams up with Mickey Rourke who plays the super-villain capable of bringing down the unbeatable Iron Man. Both have very personal reasons for wanting Tony Stark and his “I’m the best and I want you to know it” attitude out of the way… permanently.
In addition to Favreau, Downey Jr’s supporting cast includes Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Scarlett Johansson. All deliver excellent performances, but Johansson is a standout as the understatedly sexy and demure Natalie Rushman that can take out a room full of bad guys with about the same amount of time, energy, and interest it takes me to take out the trash.
Bottom line: If you keep your belief level appropriate for a comic book-based movie, it will deliver 2 solid hours of action packed fun.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The ONLY way i can see anyone giving this movie a bad review is if they were expecting it to be something it's not. As stories go, this is a pretty old one; the military is brought in to tame or get rid of the indigenous people. But the EXPERIENCE is nothing short of awesome. By using motion capture and the latest in computer generated imagery (CGI), Cameron is able to mix imaginary worlds with real actors in a way that up until now was pretty much limited to video games. Regarding the bad reviews I've seen here? I can't remember the last time I sat in a packed theater and the audience broke out in spontaneous applause as the credits rolled.
