I grew up watching Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson when they ran the movies on television. I always thought that Nigel Bruce was a bit to wishy-washy as Watson, but Rathbone was pretty good. Then along came Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke and, having read all the Holmes books, I thought they were the closest to what Conan Doyle wrote. Now we have Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. This is not your father's Sherlock Holmes nor mine, but a new take and I thought it was pretty good even though it differs from the books. Both men are very good in their parts and the settings are great. Can't wait for the inevitable sequal.
