Gigantic as the big screen that portrays her, Precious has endured horrors that only extend the trope of the suffering slave at the mercy of sadistic monsters, but the film doesn’t dwell on the evil-doers--with the highly notable exception of the mother, whose complicity in the victimization of Precious anchors the nearly primordial identity crisis that Precious must resolve in order to emerge as a human being from her virtually catatonic acceptance of a worthless existence. It's a wonderful experience to identify, against all plausibility, with this woebegone creature as she responds, often barely in time, to the frustrated but loving outreach of a humanity that appears to Precious in guises as unlikely to her as she is to us.
