I have enjoyed Mr. Perry's films and how he delves into lives. Temptation had a decent story line, but the parts that would have been good as shocker points were dragged out. When dragged out, it loses its effect.
Denzel is one of my favorite actors, but this one was a little rough. Opens with him in bed with a female without much care, dealing with ex on the phone, and drowning problems in substances. People supposedly knew of his problems, but let him carry on and endanger themselves and others. Despite that he landed a plane as no one else could, the focus turns on his personal issues as someone has to be blamed. Quite frankly the issues with the plane noted in the maintenance log would have grounded the plane; it would not have been permitted to fly years after such notations. I would have liked to have seen in the hearing the mention of no other pilot in simulations was able to land the plane without killing all on board, but even our current legal system likes to leave out such details in order to go after someone. It is easier to go after an individual than the corporations who failed at their jobs. "Whip" supposedly has a revelation that is rarely seen in real life, yet it is good to see the moral compass win over faults. Touching, yet bothersome.
In this movie Tyler Perry had a gift to express views from so many angles - his professional position, unwanted but felt necessary for his father, his disgruntled brother, rich and poor, black and white. A few spots were a bit beyond believable, but overall he is talented and the movie is touching.
The movie seemed to be about 2-3 decades behind the times. The effects were simplistic, before the higher technology we have now. I thought it would be more of a superhero theme. It was more of a high school documentary and video diary of three guys easily impressed with their powers they increase each day. How they got the powers, other than just finding a glowing rock, is not expressed. Nor is how they came to try and accomplish the acts they did, except for the one who gets angry and abuses the power he has. The idea was ok, but it could have been developed and filmed in a much better way.
This actually had a number of laugh out loud moments for many in the theater. I did not care for some of the sex scenes, reeks of immaturity, but some had humor. Not a huge fan of Timberlake's acting, but he did fairly well in this one. Parental roles were a bit stretched, assuming made so to emphasize points. Emotions done well. Liked the short one-liners and funny actions that did not even need words.
I like some of the characters, but the story was poor. If people act that selfishly, from parents to fiancees, they should not marry as it is doomed to fail. The men only cared about getting laid and ragged on the couple for waiting. The wedding was largely rushed for this reason, moreso than her trip to be. To not really know each other or bother to meet each other's families first - really, there is no hope in long term with that. Just a bit of fun that will last about as long afterwards. I did like the end song, as that is played at nearly every wedding I have attended. I wish there was more maturity in the relationships - can have that with humor, understanding, and serious issues worked out.
The movie as a whole I enjoyed. In life it is like the consideration of desire over "should do" and wonder how much you can get of both before or without possibly messing up your or the other person's life. The brief telling of personal matter leading to sex was unnecessary and ruins the love part - then they are risking all for infatuation. Also it is unrealistic to expect a girl to wait when disappearing many months to years at a time, reappearing when lonely. I could see the getting the career paths straight before the relationship, though, allowing greater choices and better decisions by being established first.
This movie had a few laugh out loud funny moments, but Vaughn they turned into a person who cannot make a decision and readily accepts abuse. I despise trampiness and cheating, as if it should be readily accepted in society. The business portion was decent. Liked the ending proposal.
None of the characters portrayed emotion well. There were several times that I wondered the reason the characters did not just respond plainly about what was asked. I did not think Maguire could show emotion well in Spiderman and there was only a couple times in this movie the emotion felt even slightly real. The story itself would be more appealing with better emotional acting and regular dialogue.
This movie was action packed. It felt like an upgraded Poltergeist with a person figuring out pending disaster and managing to stay 1 step ahead while all around him people suffer. It also felt like a "praise Obama" flick - quite frankly I think he would join the other rich people; not stay behind. This would be a rich person's dream - to rid of poor, "less deserving" people in one huge sweep. The movie ties biblical events in, too. Basically the action was enjoyable, though often far-fetched. It was entertaining. It could have been made a bit more realistically in actions and emotions.
