This production of Faust topped our new list of favorites. The modernized setting, in post-WWI, beginning the nuclear period, did not detract from the 1800s music originally set in the 1600s setting. Rarely are modernizations successful, but this one was because it was so artfully produced, directed and performed. We hope Fathom Events and AMC theaters stream this Faust again during summer encores..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

For Opera and Baroque Music Lovers

Baroque opera is different from classical. This NY Met production was excellent. And no better way to see NY Met than with Live in HD Streaming -- HD audience sees and hear more than live audience sees, due to multiple cameras. And unobtrusive sub-titles translated the lyrics from Italian to English, so the story is intelligible.
Any Baroque period music fan/expert should enjoy the singing stars's performances, and British Baroque expert conductor Harry Bicket re-configured the NY Met orchestra to sound Baroque. Excellent job.
Handel, bless his dead soul, wrote way too much music for the simple short story, forcing the singing stars to repeat, and repeat ad nauseum, many of their lines. Their roles certainly showed off their skills, and all the singing stars were exceptionally wonderful. So, just close your eyes and enjoy the music.
Unfortunately, Met artistic management chose to include two long intermissions plus interviews, that contributed to the four hour session. The interviews are always interesting and educational, so don't eliminate them. Maybe two intermissions were a good idea, because they gave us time to buy ice cream sandwiches and go the the rest rooms for much needed potty breaks!!! ;-)
In case anyone reading this is not already a Met fan, do go to all the Live in HD live streams or encore performances. Too bad there won't be encores of the last two Wagner Ring operas. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excellent, excellent, excellent in every aspect -- musically and production. Too bad so few attended. Exhilirating entertainment and education. Back Stage Pass with Deborah Borda and Dudamel and violinist Jansen alone worth the price of admission..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

So good!! Why would anyone use the same amount of time to see the junk projected in other theaters. Beautiful singing of touching (emotional) songs by splendid voices.

Excellent Performance. Too Many Technical Glitches

Performance itself excellent, superb, as we expected from Zubin Mehta, Rene Fleming and Joseph Callega, the Maltese Tenor.
BUT, problems with transmission and projection detracted: Sound too loud, but did help drown out the heavy booms from trash films in adjacent theaters. Out of focus. About every ten minutes frames dropped and sound momentarily interrupted. About every ten minutes there was an audio (only) buzz for a small moment. Last fifteen minutes there was audio static, like an old 78 rpm record (no effect on video). At end, theater personnel did not turn on the lights, so some very elderly customers had to carefully exit in the dark without falling; potential cause of injury; lawsuit looking for a place to happen and a lawyer to press..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Better Than Hollywood

Excellent, as Metropolitan Opera always is. Classy. Not low-class as most of Hollywood is. No graphic violence to contaminate the audience. Beautiful music, not the noise Hollywood pawns on audiences.

Outstanding. Totally "class" act. Top of the heap of entertainment experiences. Better than live in person because of the better camera angles and intermission educational content. Far superior to the trash produced by Hollywood.
