Opera, GREAT; camera work, not so great

Nixon in China is great - a masterpiece, even. The music is haunting and evocative of the situation of the subject, the figures involved and of the circumstances of the times - and yes, sadly we're old enough to remember watching the television coverage, so we have a very specific point of reference. The players, staging and direction were all super. What needs re-thinking is the Met's recording/broadcast camera directions - the opera's staging and context are often lost through too-extended close-ups, and sometimes the close-ups, despite the actors' great performances, even unnecessarily emphasize some of the emotions which are intended to be more subtle by being part of a larger frame. But was it a good experience overall, and if one couldn't be at the Met to see it, is it a must-see? ABSO-you-know-what-ly!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best chase scenes since Wanted

OK, Cameron Diaz is no Angelina Jolie, and there is a point where you wonder if this movie will go on and On and ON . . . but nothing's perfect, right? So you're wondering why we gave it a 5 after that lead-in? Well, this is perfectly entertaining and well worth the time to watch it. Our 18 year old niece went with us, and she ended up giving it a 5 also, when all was said and done. Surprisingly, Cruise and Diaz work well together in this humorous romp with plenty of great action scenes and some minor mind-bending, all wrapped up in a chick flick. And although Viola Davis' part is tiny and well beneath her incredible acting talents, it's wonderful to see her any time in any role, like the always-wonderful Celia Weston. Together these two greatly enjoyable actresses add immensely to the landscape of what is, otherwise, almost exclusively Cruise and Diaz, and they complement the stars and plot instead of detract from it, as is so often the case. Here's hoping there's a sequel!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you can get past the dirt

If you can get past the dirt that is interjected into the scenery (and I do mean interjected - on their clothes, on the furniture, on the floor) in order to have the woods AND a (seemingly) Manhattan-like apartment in 21st century in one contstant set . . . then the performance was magnificent. All 3 sopranos were amazing, as were the 3 male performers. And (up until the dirt) the concept and staging was awesome.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
