I see about 80 movies per year. I have seen a lot of movies in the last fifty years. AVATAR is clearly one of the best movies I have ever seen. Three reasons: 1. The experience of this movie is more chemical than mental. I felt it. 2. There are some messages in here, but I didn't find the dangling metaphors and obvious connections to who we are as Americans as unnecessary gravity. You adopt the avatars and creatures as real. And 3. This is clearly the best 3D movie ever made. The intelligence on how it was used is dazzling and refreshing. Humans don't sense that much dimension and depth, because we don't take the time to see life that way. The movie actually gets 6 stars and I think the 3D glasses should be named CAMERONS.
The IMAX theater in the City Center 15: Cinema De Lux in White Plains, New York has a problem. They have done a terrible job of getting rid of the fruit flies, fleas and spiders who like to land on or crawl across the lens of the projector. While watching the highly magnified movies of IMAX, it is disconcerting to see what appears to be a giant fly on the face of the leading lady. It distracts the viewers from the artistic work of the movie. STAR TREK was not the TV show, it was the beginning of many journeys and I do believe this will be the franchise of the 2010s. See this one, because there will be many more. With or without fruit flies, this is a hit. Dwight Douglas White Plains, NY
Okay, we saw the end of the Harrison Ford involvement in the life of Indiana Jones and this saga. And we all saw the symbolic handing of the torch (the fedora) to the young Jr., but wait, James Bond never handed his martini glass to the next actor? Why so obvious George and Stephen? OH, that is right, you are into symbolism, like the fact that the telephone pole looks like a cross when we see nuns in the lower right of the screen, and there are 13 in a row... like at the last supper. And short of accusing them of using the sky from the War of The Worlds and the launch sequence from Close Encounters... this was an original movie, of sorts. I liked it. I didn't love it, but if you are going to go out on a WHAT IF note Mr. Ford, you picked a good one. Joseph Campbell would be proud, but in the end, who are those crystal meth heads anyway? Are they coming back? How long will it be before they come back? Surely not 18 years. It is a good movie; just don't take a critic or a real Jones cultist, for they will sure doubt its quality. It is just a good movie with comfortable characters. The thrills are worth the price. Go see it. dd
