Drive legally but Fast to see Drive ....

... one of the summer's (summer is almost gone) best atmospheric, action, suspense movies. Filmed with a minimalist attitude so that the visuals, music, cinematography, settings and character personalities become even more important than in a typical action movie. Some are complaining about the lack of dialogue but I found the limited dialogue in this one refreshing and enhancing. A break out role for Gosling and an A+ job by his deft supporting actors ... including Mulligan, Cranston, Perlman & Brooks. Violent, adult only movie - not for the kiddies under 17. A chrome plated rhino horn hood ornament up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Contagion will "Bug You" ....

.... in this well-done, taught thriller about the possible end of humankind due to the spread of our smallest and most lethal killer ... a mutating germ that is easily passed from human to human and has a high mortality rate. Contagion might make you a bit uncomfortable as we all suspect that this can happen at anytime and may be happening now in quasi-controlled and limited areas around the globe. Well acted drama with many of filmdom's current class of A-list movie actors involved. Even if the premise is not fully original - these actors doing what they do so well makes seeing Contagion a worthwhile endeavor.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Last Circus is a Blender of Graphic Imagry ...

... set against a backdrop of war and the insane atrocities often found in war and the circus with it's clowns, acts and animals. Entwined within everything is a twisted love story between 3 people who are damaged and trapped by their past and circumstances. This movie is not for the faint of heart ... nor is it for those that like nice clean endings to the stories they read and crisp, clean edges to the artwork they study and admire. Every minute "The Last Circus" will force you to think and you will find it difficult to take your eyes off of the screen even during the gritty, sad and bloody ending. War, Violence, Laughter, Passion, Love, Pain, Revenge, Art, Separation - all are explored and exploited with intensity and ferociousness in this "hard to categorize" tale about life and life's unrequited loves and personal goals. A festooned, bloody rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Another Harvest Moon - A Snapshot of The Elderly

Another Harvest Moon is a tale of 4 elderly friends in a nursing home and the family and staff that interact with them. It is played for real without hype and melodrama. This is a quiet, contemplative movie that seems to be telling us, no matter what our eventual circumstances, life goes on and it is and will be what we make of it. Great to see these aged actors doing what they do best and with nuance and flair. The movie succeeds but it is a bit slow at times. Quite a contrast to the typical weekend movie fare in the multiplex. Older folks will likely enjoy this and most others will likely be a bit bored. A poly-gripped rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Future - Convoluted Emotional Meanderings....

.... that do not strike a resonating chord with most in the movie audience but perhaps this is due to some personal therapeutic need by writer-director-actress Miranda July. "Paw paw" not withstanding there are a few moments that could pique your interest but these do not last long and they end up going nowhere. Miranda July has a future as an actress .... not sure about writing and directing - time will tell. Quirky with potential that sputters out. A plaid rhino horn down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Unlock a 70 Year Old Mystery with Sarah's Key ...

An intricate tale of tragedy, love, loss and heritage so well told and with a deft director's touch. Kristin Scott Thomas is perfect as the journalist that uncovers the life of a 9 year old Jewish girl - which is stolen away by the French police at the Nazi's commandeering in 1942 Paris. We get to uncover, with the reporter, the life and emotional pain of this girl as she moves on in her life through her grief and guilt ... finally succumbing to her sadness. She had the key to save her little brother, alas too late in spite of heroics born of someone far older than 9, but not the key to unlock her own personal freedom and happiness in the face of her sorrow. One of the better films, so far, of 2011 ... not to be missed. Worth seeking out. A rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Gurad is English Humor at it's Best ....

Brendan Gleeson plays "The Guard" and does it with the cutting sardonic wit that English movies are famous for ... and does it well. Very funny movie that will have you smiling when you aren't chuckling out loud. My only complaint is the heavy English accents are occasionally hard to decipher so I felt like I may have missed about 20% of the lines that would have even added more to the flavor and enjoyment of the move. Bullocks on that score! A tea bag festooned rhino horn way up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Attack the Block - Rocks - See it!

What a pleasant surprise Attack the Block was! If you have a chance to find this one playing in a theater near you - even if you have to drive a bit to get there - then go and see it. Worth a theater viewing and a theater will show it off in its best light. Original, unflinching horror-alien invasion movie with many surprises and twist ... believable and completely entertaining from start to finish. Best alien creatures in a long time. Very cool and very frightening. A big, glowing, fluorescent rhino horn way up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Silent House Speaks Volumes ....

...and it is shot in one continuous camera shot for all of it's 78 minutes. That alone makes it worth the experience of a viewing. Add to this the twists and turns that are happening right in front of you (one continuous shot remember) and the way that the movie drags you in and immerses you in it's environment and story ... is simply amazing! Unusual, riveting and suspenseful from the opening minute to the final scene ... "The Silent House" is an adult psychological horror movie that is worth a theater viewing. A cobweb entangled rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Cold Fish is Sadistic, Violent and Hypnotic ....
PostedAugust 22, 2011

from Arizona
A psychological tale of sadism, serial killers, violence and insanity ... and tropical fish. The movie is mesmerizing in it's unfolding tale of the owners of 2 tropical fish shops that cross paths and become entangled in forbidden activities - sadomasochistic relationships and murder. The movie goes much further than just murder as it explores the insanity of reveling in murder and sadistic psychological abuse. There are several times in the last half of "Cold Fish" that you will want to turn away only to find yourself continuing to watch in fascination at the insane depravity of what is being shown on the screen. Writer-director Sono succeeds because he takes his time and allows the audience to follow the downward spiral of one man and his family being "sucked into" the violent vortex of another man who is dominant, violent and crazy. This movie is for adults only, extremely violent with some perverse sexual situations. If you are easily offended by psychological torture and graphic violence then Cold Fish is not for you. A still-shaking rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
